Where to find and how to farm for Ginseng Root in Fallout 76

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

Dedicated to Lady Emma and Salli Sassi, you better be Ginseng experts after this ;)

There are only 26 Ginseng plant spawns in game, producing 26 Ginseng Roots (or 52 with Green Thumb).

Ginseng Roots can only be harvested from plants; they can not be purchased from vendors or found in containers.

Ginseng Root is used in the following recipes:

If you are only after small quantities of the above mentioned teas or want to try them before you farm the ingredients, the finished teas can be purchased from the following vendors:

Infused Bloodleaf Tea

Steeped Aster Tea

Steeped Tato Flower Tea

  • Yasmin Camp Ally - 5.88%

  • Random Encounter Food Merchant - 4.08%

Farming Tips and Tricks

As with all farming, it is recommended that you run the following perk cards:

  • Green Thumb perk card under Perception

  • Good with Salt perk card under Luck or the Refrigerated Backpack (available from Camp Adams vendor machines)

Keep an eye out for "Verdant Season". Verdant Season adds a 33% chance for a double yield from any plant within the region where Verdant Season is active. In layman's terms, while this event is active, you have a 33% chance of getting an extra 2 ingredients from every plant that you harvest. This also stacks with the Green Thumb perk card under Perception.

This unmarked event is a food buff farmer's favourite, because it makes farming for rare or difficult ingredients a lot more productive. However, the game doesn't always tell you when it is Verdant Season in a particular area. Sometimes you will see a notification on the top left hand side of your screen saying one of the following:

  • It's a verdant season in (region name here)! Enjoy the abundance!

  • The verdant season has been extended in the (region name here)

  • The verdant season in (region name here) has ended.

Other times you will just see that you are collecting four ingredients from a plant instead of two.

It is advised that you refresh your pick up history list before going on a Ginseng run.

The easiest way to refresh your pick up history list is to pay a visit to the book house in Summersville. Pick up every single burnt book and text book on all three floors, plus the piles of books on the back table.

You only need to pick up 250 books/items to refresh your pick up history list. There should be a total of 289 books in the book house, but if you pick up everything not bolted down, on all three floors, then you don't need to worry too much if you miss a few burnt books.

There are other ways and places to collect 250 items but the book house is the easiest way because you don't need to keep track of how many items you have picked up.

Ginseng Farming Route

Some Ginseng plants are fixed spawns and others are not. A fixed spawn means that unless you have harvested them recently, the spawn will always be there. The other spawns have a 35% chance to be there.

NOTE: To make it easier to see the Ginseng in the photos, I have used the Nuked Flora & Creatures setting in custom worlds. Some of these are currently bugged and do not glow. An accurate photo of a Ginseng plant can be found in the cover banner of this guide.

Vault 76

35% chance to spawn

1x Ginseng Root

From Vault 76, turn West and run straight forward. Jump over the railing, the path and the stairs until you get to the carpark at the bottom. Stand on top of the first parked car on your left and face SSW. Walk forward, between the hole in the fence, between two large trees until you see a camp site and a rusty ute/pick up truck in front of you. Just before the mattress is a tree log. Follow the tree log to your right and the Ginseng Root plant should be a few steps in front of you.

Ingram Mansion

Fixed spawn

2x Ginseng Root

From the spawn-in point at Ingram Mansion, follow the road down towards the mansion until you get to the tree log "fence" edging said mansion. You will see a skull and some gutshroom eyeballs forming a doorway/entrance. Slowly walk through the entrance while looking down and to your left. You will see the Ginseng Root plant on the corner.

Turn North, run forward and stand on the top of the water fountain/feature. Face East and you will see a green roof on your left. Jump over and stand on the green roof. Face East again, drop down so you are standing inside the black car and then turn North. The last Ginseng Root will be on your right, against the rock wall.

Bolton Greens

Fixed spawn

6x Ginseng Root

From the fast travel point, run forward until you are standing on the road. Turn right and follow the road down until you get to a power pole on your right. You will know you are at the right pole because the hedge fence on the left of the road ends in line with the power pole. Stand at the pole and turn North. Walk forward and stop at the tree in front of you. There is 1x Ginseng Root plant at the base of the tree.

Turn and walk back to the main road. Face East and follow the road down past 3 tanks/APC's. Stop on the roof of the 4th APC. Turn North-ish and shuffle over until you are directly facing the power pole. There will be a Starlight Berry bush at the base of the power pole. Slowly look up from the base of the power pole and you will see 1x Ginseng Root plant to the right of the power pole.

Stand on top of the 4th APC again and jump back to the roof of the tank. Turn SSW until you see a large tree pine tree. Between the road and the pine tree are two medium-sized trees, one on the left and one on the right. Jump down from the tank and walk over to the medium-sized tree on your left. Stand at the base of the tree and look South. The Ginseng Root plant will be between the base of the tree and the mutfruit plant.

Turn around and run back to the main road. Face East and follow the road up until you get to the end of the blue truck and trailer. Jump on the back of the trailer and look East. There should be a power pole in front of you to your left. Slowly walk over to the power pole. The Ginseng Root plant will be a few steps before the power pole.

Once you have harvested that plant, turn around and stand on the back of the blue truck and trailer. Turn until you are facing South. You should be able to see a large dead tree in front of you. To the left, just before the large dead tree, is a small tree. Head towards the small tree. A few steps before the small tree, you will find another Ginseng Root plant.

Stand at the bottom of the large dead tree mentioned above and face NE. Walk forward until you hit the rock face. Turn East and follow the rock face until you get to a large tree on your right. The final Ginseng Root plant is at the base of the large tree.

The Whitesprings Golf Club

Fixed spawn

3x Ginseng Root

From the spawn in point, turn and face North. Jump or jetpack over or run around the tennis court until you are standing on top of the building in front of you. Face NE, walk forward, and stand on the very corner of the roof. There should be a car park to your right and a road leading to some houses on your left. Jump down and follow the road on your left until you get to the start of the houses on your left. Walk up the stairs on your left and follow the porch/verandah past 5 doorways. Enter the 6th doorway on your left and you will see the 3 Ginseng Root plants in front of you, against the far wall.

Miners Monument

35% chance to spawn

2x Ginseng Root

From the fast travel point, turn and face North. Walk forward until you get to the road. Follow the road down towards the fissure site, sticking to the left hand side of the road. You will see a rusty car on your left with a Ginseng Root plant on either side of the car.

Camp Venture

35% chance to spawn

3x Ginseng Root

From the spawn-in point, turn around and follow the road down until you see a house on your right. Inside that house are 2 Ginseng Root plants in pots.

Exit the house and walk back over to the road. Face NE and walk forward along the road until you see a ruined house on your left. Inside the ruined house is another Ginseng Root in a pot.

Dabney Homestead (KMAX Transmission)

35% chance to spawn

5x Ginseng Root

Fast travel to KMAX Transmission and run over to Dabney Homestead.

The first Ginseng Root can be found between the 2 scarecrows, against the wire fence.

The next 3 Ginseng Root plants can be found in front of the wood pile, facing North. (Stand on top of the wood pile to make it easier to see them).

The last Ginseng Root can be found to your right, next to the ute/pickup truck.

Delano Grange

35% chance to spawn

1x Ginseng Root

Don't forget to check the rare baseball bat spawn here.

From the fast travel point, head towards the house on your left (North). Inside the house, in the SW corner, is a Ginseng Root plant in a pot.

Tanagra Town

35% chance to spawn

1x Ginseng Root

From the spawn-in point, follow the road until you get to the end of the house. Turn so you are facing directly East and run straight. You may need to veer left around the base of the tree/town. Keep running East. Pass the bus shelter and then a leaning tree on your right. Keep going until you get to the shed with the truck and trailer parked out in front. Turn SE and walk forward until you are standing next to the yellow shipping container on the back of the truck. Inside the shipping container is 1x Ginseng Root plant in a pot.

Vault 94

35% chance to spawn

1x Ginseng Root

Don't forget to check the rare baseball bat spawn here.

Two irradiated Sugar Bombs can spawn on one of the tables in the marketplace.

Once you have loaded into the vault, veer slightly left and run through the large doorway in front of you. Keep running straight, through the market place, until you hit a wall. Turn right and go down two sets of stairs to the bottom floor. Turn right and enter the Atrium. In the far left-hand corner of the room is a set of stairs. Run over to the stairs and take them to the top. Turn left and follow the white rail until you see a blue and a red metal crate. Walk around the crates until you are facing the Atrium with the crates in front of you. The Ginseng plant is slightly in front of and to the right of the red crate, half buried in the dirt.
