How to start Grunt Hunts

There is no questline, cost, or requirements to start a Grunt Hunt.

Simply fast travel to Highway Town > Bounty Board

ree

From the Bounty Board, turn left, and you will see The Last Resort.

Enter the saloon and face north. You’ll see The Ghoul directly ahead, against the back wall.

ree

To start a Grunt Hunt, interact with the flyers on the table.

The quest notification appears in the top right corner of your screen, depending on your notification settings. It shows the Outlaw’s location and the mutation.

ree

You have 10 minutes to kill the Outlaw.

ree

You can only have one Grunt Hunt active at a time, but there’s no limit to how many you can run. Just return to the Saloon each time, and you can keep running them back-to-back all day.

Enemies

Event Boss

Each Grunt Hunt has a boss with a Daily Ops mutation. The game remembers the last three mutation types you fought and temporarily removes those from the pool. This stops you from getting the same mutation over and over. The next boss type is chosen at random from the remaining mutation types.

List of possible event boss mutation types:

  • Frosty Outlaw

  • Healing Outlaw

  • Resilient Outlaw

  • Stealthy Outlaw

  • Swift-Footed Outlaw

  • Toxic Outlaw

  • Volatile Outlaw

Event enemies

You’ll encounter a minimum of ten enemies in total, including the Outlaw. All of them spawn with the same mutation as the Outlaw, but once the Outlaw is killed, the mutation drops off, and they revert to normal enemies. Some are already in the area, and the rest are filled in by either feral ghouls or Rust Raiders, depending on the location your Grunt Hunt sends you to.

During the event, the game keeps the area topped up with enemies. It checks how many hostiles are nearby and spawns more if the count drops too low, with the boss included in that total. If any wander too far or get stuck, the game replaces them so the event keeps moving.

List of possible event enemies and locations

  • Feral Ghouls

    • Sandy's Sock Hop

    • Shade Hill Church

1* Grunt Hunts

When you first start running Grunt Hunts, the boss will only ever spawn as a 1* enemy. This is the starting tier for everyone.

2* Grunt Hunts

Once you have completed 10 Grunt Hunts and finished the 2 Star challenge, the event boss can spawn as either:

1* enemy - x%

or

2* enemy - x%

3* Grunt Hunts

After completing 50 Grunt Hunts and finishing the 3 Star challenge, the event boss can spawn as either:

1* enemy - x%

 or

2* enemy - x%

or

3* enemy - x%

Locations

The game keeps a short memory of where your last three Grunt Hunts took place. Those locations are temporarily taken out of rotation, so you aren’t sent back to the same spots over and over. Your next Grunt Hunt will be chosen at random from the remaining locations.

For example, if your last three hunts were at Hamley Run Camp, Dino Peaks Mini Golf, and Fort Steuben, those three will sit out for the next roll. Once you complete a hunt at a new location, the oldest one on the list is added back into the pool.
